Atlantic City Mayor Langford Holds Summit Meeting

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ - Atlantic City Mayor Lorenzo Langford on Friday, June 4th, brought the chairs of his three summit committees together to discuss progress. The summit meeting was held at the Atlantic City Convention Center in a public gathering.

Mayor Langford told the audience in a citywide cleanup effort, about 2,100 volunteers gathered up some 7,500 pounds of trash in 740 bags during a Saturday event. In efforts to get traffic flowing more smoothly on Atlantic Avenue near the bus terminal, a third lane was added during the Memorial Day week-end.

Don Marrandino, COO of Harrah’s Entertainment East Coast Properties, reported on the marketing committee, including ideas on customer service. He also thanked Mayor Langford for his efforts in bringing the casino industry, state, local, and municipal leaders, business and community leaders, together. Marrandino noted more events were held in April to bring people to Atlantic City, including a boxing event and a tennis match that attracted 7,300 tennis enthusiasts. He said the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority will assist in funding more events at Boardwalk Hall which attracts visitors during week-days.

Ken Calemmo, a business leader, reported for Kevin DeSanctis, CEO of Revel Entertainment, on progress of the Clean and Safe Committee, noting facades on businesses on the famous Boardwalk were moving along. He also said the CRDA was working with Atlantic Electric to get new lighting on the boards. New signage also is being placed on the boardwalk So far, the CRDA has spent approximately $100,000,000 on new facades on the boards.

Linda Kassekert, chair of the Casino Control Commission, reported on Intergovernmental Affairs. While progress on regulatory issues was moving ahead, she noted that a Job Fair held recently hired 517 local people to full time, part-time and seasonal work.

During a question-answer period, Mayor Langford noted the committee was discussing ways to utilize Bader Field. He said a water park for families was among the ideas being considered. A budget for advertising also was discussed.
