Atlantic City continues to struggle in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. Nearly 1,500 Atlantic City families with school-aged children were displaced by the storm. Some remain in shelters. Many have returned to homes that need repairs and are without heat. The sad fact is that, while school started on Monday, many children are without the most basic of needs to return. We can help.Our school officials are working tirelessly on the overwhelming task of getting these children – many of whom have only the clothes they wore at the time of evacuation – back to “normal,” at least during the school day. This is a ground-up effort. We have been in close touch with the Atlantic City School District as they struggle to set up a distribution center that can supply our kids and their families with the items they need to begin life after Sandy. Our first step will be to gather supplies and set up a distribution center that will continue to operate when our temporary centers cease operations. Over the next few days, we need to secure:

– New or gently used, freshly laundered winter coats
(children’s size 6X, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 and adult size S, M, L, XL)
– Winter hats and gloves
– Underwear (packages of 3 are ideal, all sizes)
– Undershirts (packages of 3 are ideal, all sizes)
– Navy blue collared shirts (school “uniform” sizes as above_
– Navy blue or khaki (tan) color pants (school “uniform” – sizes as above)
– Blankets, sheets, bedspreads
– Mattresses (or air mattresses)
– Toothbrushes, Toothpaste
– Soap, shampoo
– Hairbrushes/combs
– Washcloths/towels
– Backpacks
– Pens, pencils
– Notebooks
– Peanut butter, soup, cereal, juice, granola bars etc. Ready to eat is best.
Cooper Levenson has arranged for the generous donation of a large truck by Atlantic Coast Moving & Storage, which we will have in the parking lot on North Carolina Avenue behind our office at 1125 Atlantic Avenue to collect the above items from Monday Nov. 12 at 9 a.m. until Friday Nov. 16 at noon. Look for the small blue building with the “Court House Parking” sign. We will have personnel on hand to accept your items.
