Before leaving your driveway in winter, it is important to remember to clear snow and ice from your vehicle — it’s the law in New Jersey.

Failing to do so can result in fines ranging from $25 to $75, even if the snow or ice doesn’t fall off while driving. If snow or ice causes injury or property damage, fines can be between $200 and $1,000.

New Jersey law specifically mandates that drivers remove all snow and ice from their vehicles, especially from the roof, hood, and windows, to ensure a clear view of the road.

Safety Tips for Driving in Snow

1. Drive Slowly: Adhere to speed limits and adjust your speed based on road conditions.

2. Increase Following Distance: Maintain an 8–10 second gap between your vehicle and the one in front of you.

3. Use Low Beams: Turn on your headlights and use low beams when driving in snowy conditions.

4. Give Snowplows Space: Allow snowplows ample room to operate safely.

5. Avoid Tailgating: Be cautious when passing other vehicles, and only do so when necessary.

6. Keep an Emergency Kit: Have an emergency kit in your car in case of battery failure or other issues.

Vehicle Light Requirements

New Jersey law also requires drivers to use their vehicle lights in specific situations:

– When it’s dark.

– From 30 minutes after sunset to 30 minutes before sunrise.

– When visibility is low.

If you cannot see more than 500 feet ahead or are driving through fog, smoke, mist, or other conditions that impair visibility, you must have your lights on.

By following these laws and safety tips, you can help ensure a safer winter driving experience for yourself and others on the road.

If you were injured in a vehicle crash in snow or ice and believe it was due to negligence, you should speak with a lawyer.
