John X. Denney, Jr. focuses his practice on commercial litigation
Mr. Denney is an attorney with more than five decades of experience in federal prosecution, public defense, and complex civil litigation. He focuses his practice on a broad range of litigation and advisory matters drawing on extensive trial and appellate experience.
Throughout his career, Mr. Denney held senior leadership and trial roles in both public and private practice. He served as First Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Delaware, where he represented federal agencies, tried numerous civil and criminal jury cases, and handled appeals before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. He also served as a Deputy Attorney General for the State of Delaware, strengthening his background in high-level litigation and enforcement matters.
In the public defense arena, Mr. Denney served as a trial attorney in the Domestic Violence Unit, as well as Assistant Public Defender, conflicts counsel in Superior Court, and contract counsel in Family Court dependency and neglect matters.
His private practice and leadership experience includes managing attorney roles and solo litigation practice across a wide range of civil and criminal matters. He has also been engaged in regulatory and employment-related representation, including matters involving wage recovery, unemployment benefits, and disability benefit issues.
Mr. Denney has also contributed to legal education and training as an instructor in constitutional law, evidence, criminal law, and criminal procedure, and has supported professional development initiatives within the legal community.
A veteran of the United States Navy Reserve, he is a retired Commander and Life Member of the Society of the United States Navy. He has also maintained long-standing civic involvement in Delaware organizations, including leadership roles in statewide civic associations.
